Inspired by the Wild Atlantic Way

The Wild Atlantic Way is a landscape straight out of a fairy tale. Its lush greenery, soft rolling hills and spectacular coastal views are simply iconic. This seemingly untouched region of Ireland is also well known for its rich history, culture and fashion.

One of the most famous crafts to have emerged from the Donegal region is the production of Donegal Tweed and knitwear. For centuries the West coast of Ireland has been the source of intricately designed wool products.

Here at Triona, we are focused on keeping this tradition alive through our weaving. The rugged landscape surrounding us here in Donegal, is the main source of inspiration for many of tones and textures in our collections.

Weaving landscapes into fashion

What’s unique about our Donegal Tweed is the way each piece is designed and inspired by nature itself. From the Slieve League Cliffs to sunset over Grianán of Áileach (where kings once ruled), you are sure to carry home a piece of history.

Our products are woven from the highest quality lambswool. You may be draped in a gorgeous Marie tweed coat but you will hear the echoes of the gentle rolling of waves unto the shore at Ballymastocker Bay. Without even leaving your inner-city apartment!

Our Donegal Tweed designs reflect the lines, textures and curves of craggy cliffs and coastal beaches. The colours are earthy and vibrant, much like the Wild Atlantic Way. The deep purple of wild heather, dark brown earth, ethereal ocean blue and the green of rolling fields are all represented in various patterns and colours throughout our designs.

Each piece also relays a story, of tradition and an ancient craft woven into contemporary fashion. They are modern but retain a certain vintage aspect that is more art than clothing.

Aran sweaters (also known as a Fisherman sweater) have been around for many centuries in Ireland. They are high quality, warm and cosy but their beautiful textured designs depict a deeper meaning. A lot of thought and care goes into the creation of these products, with all of the stitches depicting different meanings. The vibrant blue and green tones of the Atlantic Ocean and golden sandy beaches can be found in the colour stories of these Irish sweaters.
