While our brand caters to both men and women, our recent international success owes much to an icon of fashion and an inspirational woman, Sarah Jessica Parker. Her choice to wear our Faye Coat on the latest season of "And Just Like That," the "Sex and the City" spinoff, has brought global attention to our craftsmanship.
However, amidst the buzz surrounding SJP, it's essential to recognise the numerous women behind our brand, tirelessly promoting Irish tweed and preserving its heritage in Donegal. Among them is Anne Mulhern, Dennis's wife, whose warmth and storytelling prowess bring the tale of Triona and Donegal Tweed to life. Also integral are Dennis and Anne's daughters, Catriona and Patricia, who play vital roles in running the business.

The Triona Family]]>Nestled in the rugged northwest corner of Ireland lies County Donegal, a land of breathtaking beauty and rich cultural heritage. Known for its dramatic coastline, rolling hills, and mist-covered mountains, Donegal has long been a source of inspiration for artists, writers, and creatives of all kinds. Among those who have been captivated by its charm are the artisans behind Triona, creators of the exquisite Triona tweed.
Triona tweed is a testament to the enduring allure of Donegal's landscape. Each thread woven into its fabric tells a story of the land, its colours mirroring the ever-changing hues of the countryside. From the vibrant greens of the moss-covered hills to the earthy browns of the peat bogs, the palette of Triona tweed reflects the natural beauty that surrounds it.
One of the most striking features of Donegal's landscape is its rugged coastline. Cliffs rise dramatically from the wild Atlantic Ocean, their rocky faces weathered by centuries of wind and waves. It's here that you'll find hues of deep blue, grey, and green, colours that find their way into Triona tweed, evoking the timeless allure of the sea.
Venture inland, and you'll discover a patchwork of fields and forests, each a different shade of green. Moss-covered stone walls crisscross the countryside, while sheep graze lazily in the meadows. These pastoral scenes inspire the soft greens and earthy tones that are characteristic of Triona tweed, colours that evoke a sense of peace and tranquility.
But perhaps the most iconic feature of Donegal's landscape is its mountains. From the majestic peaks of Errigal to the rolling hills of the Bluestack Mountains, the rugged terrain is a sight to behold. It's here that you'll find the rich browns, deep oranges, and fiery reds that give Triona tweed its warmth and character, colours that speak of the land's untamed beauty.
For the artisans at Triona, capturing the essence of Donegal's landscape is more than just a creative pursuit—it's a way of honouring the land and its people. Each piece of tweed is crafted with care and attention to detail, ensuring that the spirit of Donegal lives on in every stitch.
As you wrap yourself in a cosy Triona tweed scarf or don a stylish Triona tweed jacket, take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the land that inspired it. From the windswept cliffs to the rolling hills, Donegal's landscape is a source of endless inspiration, and in the colours of Triona tweed, its timeless beauty is brought to life.

]]>The Aran Sweater got its name from the Aran Islands off the West coast of Ireland where it was first created many years ago. In the early 1900s the Aran Islands were home to many fishermen and farmers who worked the land and sea like generations before them.
The traditional Aran Sweater was created out of necessity because of the harsh coastal weather and fashioned from local wool by skilled craftswomen in the area. These skills have been passed down from generation to generation creating sweaters that tell a tale as old as time.
In the 1950s wives of fishermen would craft these sweaters for their husbands before they would go to sea. Soon these sweaters became popular amongst locals and were sold on the Aran Islands as a source of income for their families. Back then it took between three and six weeks to hand knit a single sweater. Each sweater is steeped in Irish tradition, heritage and folklore. The intricate patterns are infused with symbolism and superstition.
A sea labourer’s clothes had to be durable, warm, stain resistant and easy to mend. Traditionally fishermen wore a dark navy tight knit sweater which was resistant to liquids and allowed for ease of movement. Over time the knitting patterns got more intricate and developed meaning.
Each stitch has its own meaning, creating a garment that can tell a story. Various styles of stitches were developed.
The cable stitch is one of our most popular stitches and is said to represent the fishermen’s ropes and symbolises a wish for a bountiful day at sea. It is also seen as a symbol of safety and brings luck to those who wear it.
The diamond stitch depicts the shape of fishing nets used to bring home the catch to the family. This stitch is said to bring wealth and success to the wearer.
The zig-zag stitch represents the twisting cliff paths on the islands can be compared the twists and turns on the journey of life.
The honeycomb stitch is an intricate stitch filled with luck and signifies abundance and brings these qualities to those who wear it.
In more recent times the Aran Sweater has become popular amongst celebrities like Steve McQueen, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor Swift and Chris Evans. Colin Farrell has set the Aran Jumper market alight with his latest role in Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin.
These Unisex Sweaters are not only fashionable and filled with heritage, they are also a sustainable purchase, produced from natural materials and made to last. Wool is a natural material that’s quality and beauty has been harnessed by craftspeople for many generations. Due to the breathable nature of Aran sweaters they can be worn more often and washed less.
We have a large range of Aran sweaters and cardigans available online with an array of traditional stitches in each style and many colours. Shop the look here.
]]>Sarah Jessica Parker called into our Triona store on the Diamond in Donegal Town whilst on holidays with her family. They have visited the store a couple of times over the years and have also been to our factory store in Ardara as they holiday in the Donegal countryside.
SJP and her family came into the store one afternoon during the summer and spotted the Faye Coat and loved it immediately! At the time, we only had a few samples of the coat made, so she is the owner of one of the first Faye Coats! She had mentioned to us that she looked forward to making good use out of it during the Winter - we had assumed she meant for the cold NY days but perhaps she had something more specific in mind at the time!
Sarah Jessica has always been a great supporter of local Donegal brands and businesses and spoke of her love and appreciation for the escapism they experience in Donegal.
Their Donegal home is situated in Kilcar, a rugged part of Donegal at the foot of the Slieve League Cliffs. This area is renowned for its exceptional quality of yarn and knitwear some of which we use in our Donegal Tweed fabrics.
We had no idea that SJP had been seen wearing one of our coats until we were contacted to enquire if that was one of our designs! We then found the photographs of Sarah wearing the Faye Coat on the 'And just like that' wardrobe page! We are so grateful to her for helping to put a small family run Irish brand on such an iconic platform.
Our in-house design team Emma Quinn and Catriona Mulhern, the daughter of founder Dennis Mulhern worked alongside Freelance designer Caoimhe Grant on this collection.
Our aim at Triona is to preserve the beauty of Donegal Tweed fabrics whilst introducing modern silhouettes that our customers will be able to wear year after year. The Faye Double Breasted Mac Coat is currently available in the Black and White Prince of Wales Check, as modeled by SJP, which has a subtle pop of red to add a fashionable twist. This style can be worn belted to highlight the waistline or worn open to give a more oversized look. Due to the popularity and versatility of this style, next year we are introducing a few more fabric options in the Faye Coat.
Triona is a family run business located in County Donegal along the Wild Atlantic Way. The founder Dennis Mulhern is a fifth generation hand weaver with a strong desire to ensure that the tradition of weaving is both maintained and preserved. The brand began as a small bespoke tweed company in our family home and now three decades later, we have become a successful Irish tweed brand with two retail stores and a visitor centre where you can learn the history behind the making of Donegal Tweed.
Family is still at the heart of the business with Dennis and Ann's children, Kieran, Catriona and Patricia all working within different departments within the business. All of our tweeds are designed and made here in Ireland. This is an important part of our history and we hope to preserve the craft of weaving for many more years to come.
We have had such an overwhelming reaction to the news of Sarah wearing our Faye Coat during filming in New York City. The support from fellow Irish brands and our customers has been so positive and we are so proud to be highlighted amongst some of the biggest Fashion brands in the world.
We look forward to welcoming Sarah and her family to Donegal again soon!

There is no shortage of imagery associated with St. Patrick's Day, but for those who observe the holiday on March 17, one emblem stands out above the rest: the shamrock. The celebration, which originated as the feast day of St. Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, centuries ago, has evolved into a day when everyone may pretend to be Irish. The festival's extraordinary global appeal is largely due to its introduction in the United States. The shamrock, on the other hand, is truly Irish in nature.
For generations, the three-leaf clover, a trefoil plant, has been regarded as Ireland's unofficial national flower. According to Irish folklore, when Saint Patrick converted the Irish to Christianity in the fourth century, he used the shamrock as an educational symbol to explain the Holy Trinity to nonbelievers. After Patrick's death, this myth became ingrained in the popular consciousness. The shamrock's significance began to intersect with religious celebrations of the saint's feast day during the 17th century, according to Cronin: Those living in poverty nevertheless wanted to appear attractive at church, and happily for them, an appropriate decoration was growing on the ground outside their dwellings. The tradition of wearing a shamrock grew in popularity throughout time.
Caleb Threlkeld, an Irish botanist and cleric, published a book on Ireland's native flora in 1726, describing the shamrock as the country's national symbol and emphasizing its significance in the context of St. Patrick's Day. "This Plant is worn by the People in their Hats on the 17. Day of March every year, (which is named St. Patrick's Day.)" wrote Threlkeld. "It being a Current Tradition, that by this Three Leafed Grass, he emblematically set forth to them the Mystery of the Holy Trinity," Threlkeld said, "It being a Current Tradition, that by this Three Leafed Grass, he emblematically set forth to them the Mystery of the Holy Trinity."
There were no shamrocks blooming in New York, Boston, or San Francisco when a wave of Irish immigrants arrived in the United States in the 18th century. As a result, they substituted the color green and pictures of the shamrock for the plant itself, while celebrating their origins with celebrations and parades. The first U.S. president was George Washington. In the 1760s, Boston hosted a St. Patrick's Day procession. When Hallmark decided to commemorate St. Patrick's Day in the 1920s, the design for their greeting cards was obvious. "The shamrock was the most popular symbol," Bradbeer told TIME in an email. According to her, the company began with shamrock postcards in 1910-1915 before moving on to manufacturing official cards for the event.
Irish brands picked up on the plant's status as a symbol of Ireland and helped disseminate the idea around the world. The shamrock, for example, is the logo of the Irish airline Aer Lingus. Even when the company rebranded in January, its CEO stated unequivocally that the shamrock would remain. The shamrock is still one of the most popular symbols on Hallmark St. Patrick's Day items and cards, and all of the products, according to Bradbeer, feature the color green. St. Patrick's Day is the ninth-largest card-sending occasion in the United States, according to the Greeting Card Association, with around 7 million cards estimated to be issued this year, according to Bradbeer.
Despite the fact that our perception of the shamrock as a symbol of St. Patrick's Day has lost its religious significance, the shamrock's worth still appears to be unaffected.
The shamrock is a well-known Irish flower. It is said that St. Patrick chose it from the ground to symbolize his belief in the Trinity. ]]>This collection is a stunning collection that depicts 12 different historical Irish events through symbols inscribed into each piece.
The sculptures seen on Celtic high crosses around Ireland dating back to the 5th century inspired Irish silversmith Michael Hillard to produce the initial History of Ireland series in 1970. The designs have developed since then, becoming more contemporary, but the designer's inspiration and message have remained a continual reminder of our history.
Each piece is made of sterling silver and is Irish hallmarked at Dublin Castle's assay office. The History of Ireland series is engraved with 12 symbols that reflect some of Ireland's most important historical eras. It starts with the Celtic swirl in the Neolithic era, then moves on to St. Patrick, the majestic Round towers of 9th century Ireland, the Vikings, the Norman invasion, the Battle of the Boyne, United Irishmen, the Irish Flag, the Great Famine, Emigration, the GPO, and the Partition of Ireland.
Following the declaration of independence from British authority, the War of Independence broke out between rival republican forces. Southern Ireland and Northern Ireland were created as distinct self-governing entities as a result of the peace accord that ended the conflict. Northern Ireland was largely populated and ruled by protestants loyal to the crown at the time, and the parliament there chose to remain a part of the United Kingdom. The ensuing chaos is widely known, but while the geographical divide still exists, relations between the North and the South are currently peaceful.
The Battle of the Boyne took place in 1690 between Catholic King James II and Protestant King William of the Dutch House of Orange, who was his nephew and son-in-law. The conflict was fought over three issues: the English throne, French dominance in Europe, and control in Ireland. This battle is considered pivotal in the conflict between the Irish Protestant and Catholic populations because it ensured Protestant control in Ireland for decades.
Saint Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, was instrumental in transforming Ireland from a nation of pagan illiteracy to a haven of scholarship, culture, and Christianity in the 5th century. A legacy that we are proud of to this day and that is commemorated every year on March 17th around the world.
No beginning symbolized by a Celtic swirl cut in stone by our forefathers 5,000 years ago. The diversity of our island's first residents has formed a culture rich in heritage, beliefs, and custom that has passed down a feeling of life, faith, and hope despite whatever we have faced and wherever we have found our place over time. ...and there's no end in sight. The meandering road we've traveled to this point, a never-ending trip into the unknown future.

Our signature purple square wool cape has become one of our most sought after garments here at Triona Design and we would love to provide you with the history behind the cape in this blog post.
This traditional Irish wool cape style is combined with unique Donegal Tweed fabric to create one of our best selling styles. Our characteristic purple fabric is a mix of rich blue and fuschia tones that make a unique and highly eye-catching fabric made entirely of lambswool. These two tones combine to give a vivid purple colour that is beautifully unique. These colours are inspired by the beauty of the heather growing in our natural landscape, which can be seen in abundance here in beautiful Donegal. The Wild Atlantic Way is a popular route for many people visiting Ireland and it is easy to spot all of the beautiful tones in the rugged scenery.
As a young man, Denis Mulhern, the founder of Triona Design, would have travelled to the mountains with his family to pick the purple flower from the heather. It was a special day out where the time was spent well in the surrounding landscape. This well-known plant, sometimes known as Ling, grows abundantly on acid soil in Ireland's highlands, moors, and bogs. From July to October, its small 5mm long bell-shaped blooms grow in profuse spikes and its dark-green, scale-like leaves grow in pairs along the slender stems, painting the landscape with a vibrant purple palette.
The heather was always picked in the spring time and it represented happiness - especially during wintertime here in Ireland as it becomes dark in the afternoon and there is no light until the following morning. It is also known as a colour of good luck!
After they had picked the heather, they would then go back to the thatch cottage, place all of the heather in big pots of water and this how the beautiful tone of purple that you see in our signature purple heather cape was produced. They would also steep the lambswool in this pot and after this, the ladies would spin the wool into yarn for the men to hand weave.
A lot of the traditional cloths were quite dark and Denis' mother had a secret recipe to bring this purple hue to life and in turn, bring the fabric to life! Due to the success and popularity of this colour, we carried it through to many of our garments there after.
Shawls were a very popular garment many years ago during Denis' mothers time and this is where the inspiration for many of our capes came from. The idea was simplistic where you can put it on for any occasion and not have to worry about fixing it time and time again. The capes also gave us an opportunity to showcase the extensive range of cloths we have available and this is similar to what they used to do during the local fair days where weavers went to sell their Donegal Tweed cloth every week. When we first began making capes, we used 100% wool which was quite heavy but we now use 100% lambswool to provide a lighter weight for a variation of climates meaning this unique wool cape can be worn through every season!
Why purple you may ask? It is a bright, whimsical color that signifies a new beginning and escape from reality. Purple is a declaration of independence because it is not a basic, primary colour and it is often associated with the fusion of the mundane and the inventive.
The purple heather tweed can now be found in both the Roisin Cape and the Trisha cape. Both of these capes are one size and incredibly soft to touch, making them quite versatile and easy to wear. Donegal Tweed is renowned across the world for its exceptional quality and the cape also features what we call "bog buttons" down the front which represent the many trips that Denis and his family would have made to the bog whilst growing up.
All of these distinct characteristics, together with the usage of our distinctive Triona fabric, ensure that you will receive a truly unique Irish cape. Our Roisin and Trisha wool capes are sure to become the focal point of any ensemble and we hope you enjoyed learning more about it in this blog.

The Celtic Cross's middle ring is thought to represent the Celtic emblem for infinite love. With no beginning and no end, it is a sign of God's infinite love, with many thinking it to be a representation of Christ's halo. The Celtic cross is full of powerful symbols and is an ideal expression of the Celts' goals and desires. As a result, Celtic Jewelry craftsmen of all generations are dedicated to assuring the excellence of each item of Celtic cross jewelry. At Triona, we strive to provide our customers with a modern twist on this lovely Celtic tradition. The Celtic Cross can be found on a variety of Celtic pendants and one of a kind Irish presents.
The Celtic Cross has designated religious sites throughout Ireland since ancient times and each one has a unique story to tell. This includes biblical stories chiseled in stone which are saved for future generations. The high crosses are significant emblems of Christianity in Ireland, from the shores of Lough Neagh and the Cathedral city of Armagh to the monasteries of Clonmacnoise and Monasterboice.
According to mythology, St. Patrick observed a pagan standing stone etched with a circle which is the moon goddess's sign. He is claimed to have blessed the stone and created the first Celtic Cross, which is now a powerful symbol of faith. Many people now wear a Celtic Cross and in doing so, pay tribute to Ireland's rich cultural past - a land where saints and scholars have long resided.
The oldest high stone crosses in Ireland date from the eighth through to the twelfth centuries. Crosses are beautifully carved - the early styles exhibit knotwork whereas the later crosses have imagery of bible stories and inscriptions. Some of these later crosses are significantly taller than the early crosses, which stand roughly eight feet tall. The tallest tower stands at a towering 23 feet and there are numerous characteristics that these ancient Celtic Crosses share :
The Base is usually shaped like a pyramid and occasionally carved to add height.
The Shaft is a section which is frequently divided into panels on all sides with complex designs or artwork showing figures.
The Cap is usually at the top of the upper arm of the cross, but is not always worn.
The Head is separated into two parts: the center and arms and the majority of stone Celtic Crosses have a ring formed around the head.
Many people believe that the Celtic Cross's defining feature is the shape of the cross's head. The cross's structural strength comes from the ring shape, which supports the cross's arms. As a result, some experts believe that this shape is a continuation of an older, more delicate wooden cross form. Others believe the ring indicates a halo or disc shape around a person's head, while others believe it is a heavenly sphere, such as the sun. Others believe the Celtic Shield is represented by the ring and "rivet" shaped features on several early crosses.
We are proud to have an exquisite selection of Celtic Crosses and Solvar’s award-winning designers have created an unrivaled collection which are now available both in store and online. Below you will find three of our favourite pieces!

We are excited to be back with another Meet The Makers interview and this month, we have our skilled seamstress, Caroline who has been with us for several years now. It is important that each garment fits our customers seamlessly and from time to time, small tweaks are needed such as adjusting the length for example. We sat down and asked Caroline a few questions about her role within Triona whilst also finding out how and when her love of sewing began.
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Caroline and I'm the seamstress for Triona so I work from our Factory Store here in Ardara. I was self employed for 16 years doing alterations (anything and everything!) and as anyone knows who runs their own business, it can be tough. I spotted an ad in the paper for the Seamstress position at Triona and decided to apply. Thankfully, I got a quick response to my application and I had the challenge of making a cape on my first day as part of my interview. Four years later, I'm still here!
What does a typical day look like within Triona for you?
I could be doing anything from pressing to fitting coats on our customers, completing alterations for customers ... whatever is needed! Sometimes, I do a little bit of fringing too. There is always a variety which is great so it means no two days are the same. We are getting into busy season now with visitors from all over the world which we always love to see coming!
When did you become interested in sewing?
I was offered a summer job at a clothing factory shop and that is where I learned to sew as I didn't know how to before that. I had a big interest in knitting when I was younger and spent a lot of time making different creations. Any money I had, was spent on wool. Most children were buying sweets but not me!
What is your favourite thing about working for Triona?
When I spotted the ad initially for the position, I liked the idea of working for a family business after being self employed for 16 years so I would definitely have to say that.
Do you have a favourite piece of Triona clothing?
I absolutely love the coats and blazers! They are timeless pieces you will have in your wardrobe for many years and I enjoy altering them for customers too. After that, I would probably say the knitwear. There are so many vibrant colours in all of the collections so it's hard to choose really.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know our Seamstress, Caroline a little more and stay tuned for next month's!
]]>We have women carrying out a diverse range of roles and everyone in our team plays an integral part. We are all working towards the same end goal which is very important as it means we are on the same page and communication is key across all areas. There’s our shop floor staff, marketing team, weavers, designers, shipping team … the list could go on. During our busy periods, multi-tasking within your role is definitely key and we are very lucky that all of our team will assist each other where necessary.
What’s the most important piece of advice you have been given as a woman?
It might sound very cliche but … be honest, be yourself and don’t be afraid to use your voice. I think it comes with age where you become more comfortable with doing this and as a mother myself, I always encourage my girls to embrace other people’s personalities as it would be a very boring world if we were all the same. When I was younger, I definitely worried about pleasing others before myself but you cannot pour from an empty cup so it’s important to look after yourself. The reality of it is, you will never please absolutely everyone so be confident in your opinion and that confidence will then flow into other areas of your life.
I can’t say there is one person in particular as different people inspire me in different ways. For example, your mother is the primary female figure in your life from a young age and as a mother of two daughters, I have to remember that I am now a role model for them. I think you can take pieces of advice from all generations of women in life - your mother, grandmother, mother in law, sister etc. Every woman is individual in their own way and you can look to them as inspiration for the things they have achieved. When women support each other, incredible things can happen!
Finally, what is your favorite piece you own from Triona?
Oh it would definitely have to be my Cara blazer and I have loved it ever since they were first launched.
It’s just one of those staple pieces that is perfect for every occasion.
Whether you are a busy mum, meeting friends for lunch or want to opt for a smart / casual look, the Cara blazer is your go to.
We currently have a few beautiful variations which you can see HERE and I assure you it’s a purchase you won’t regret!
We hope you enjoyed reading this blog post and please feel free to reach out with any suggestions on topics you would like to see covered over the coming months. Wishing you all a very happy International Women's Day and remember there is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.

Tell us a little about yourself
My name is Connell Gavigan, I live in Glenties and have been working in the Triona Visitor Centre in Ardara for the last 25 years weaving.
How did you get into weaving?
My father died in 1960 and there were 10 of us in the family so we had no other option but to head out and work. I was 15 when I started weaving and filling bobbins in the mart for two and a half years. That’s where I gained my first insight into how it operated. I quickly realised it was tiring work but at the same time, loved every minute and haven’t looked back since.
When did you start working in Triona?
I started with Triona in 1998 as a weaver and have been with them ever since. One of my favourite things is seeing the bus tours arrive. You get the chance to meet with so many people from around the world and I’ve had some great conversations with people down through the years. They always enjoy the weaving demonstration that I do and learning how the garments are made. It is a big part of their visit to the store and we missed this interaction throughout Covid. Thankfully things are starting to come back to normal again.
There is a group photo of your younger days hanging on the wall here in Triona - can you give us an insight into the story behind this photo?
Oh yes, that was in 1960. At the beginning, the Visitor's Centre was only used for selling and buying wool or tweed. There were no visitors and now, it is hard to imagine that as people arrive from all parts of the world but back then, it is just how things operated before Dennis took over the business. In that photo, there are 32 weavers and we all started around the same time. 4 were bobbin fillers, me being one of them and I am still in contact with them today.
What does weaving mean to you?
It’s something I have enjoyed all my life and there was such excitement when you saw someone wearing an item you had woven - almost like a sense of pride. I was the 4th oldest child and the only one who was interested in weaving but it was such a big passion of mine and I’m very happy to still be weaving today.
What is involved in the weaving process?
At the minute, I am mainly making womenswear so first of all, you have to set up the loom. Then you beam the web - this is to get off the warping bars. You have to beam it, set it through the heddles and then through the reed. There is 2 threads per reed and for example, if I'm weaving herringbone, it has to be set up for a herringbone cloth. I work with 28 picks per inch which is essentially 28 threads per inch. Tie it up and then you are ready to rock!
What is your favourite thing about being a weaver?
Seeing a customer wearing the item - there is no better feeling and it almost feels surreal sometimes! This could be a customer walking down the street or someone from a bus tour, it all depends but either way, it provides great satisfaction because you look at them and think ... I made that!
Have you passed on the weaving to anyone else?
I surely have. I taught everyone who currently works in Triona and also some of the staff in our Visitor Centre in Ardara. There is a certain technique to the process and it takes time to take someone through it in detail. It could take you a few weeks to pick it up and others a few years but everyone here caught on very quickly. I’m sometimes asked if there is such a thing as a “good weaver” and the answer is … most definitely. Developing the skill of weaving takes time and with anything, practice makes perfect but I can confidently say that all of our staff are excellent weavers!
Tell us about your favourite cloth or pattern
It would definitely have to be Herringbone, it looks very nice on the cloth (in my opinion). I don’t have a favourite garment as such but in all my years weaving, purple and blue are the main colours I have used. At one stage, I was weaving the colour purple for 10 months! You can see this shade injected into a lot of our blankets and capes which are some of the key products here at Triona. I’m actually wearing a purple shirt today too!
]]>Here at Triona, promoting Irish design and craft is of utmost importance to us and we are very proud to have an exquisite collection of high quality jewellery that has been designed and produced in Ireland and today, we will be specifically looking at the Claddagh collection and telling you a little bit more about the history of this iconic Irish symbol.
Claddagh jewellery and in particular the Claddagh ring, is enriched with a lot of history and we hope that this blog will provide a little bit of background on the history of this Celtic symbol as it is a treasured symbol of Irish people all over the world.
The story behind the Claddagh ring has been passed down through the generations, it is a rather romantic story that focuses on a man named Richard Joyce and the Claddagh ring that he had created. In time, Richard Joyce became a fully proficient master craftsman and once he discovered that his love had waited for his return from sailing, he presented her with the Claddagh Ring to symbolise their love, friendship and loyalty.
The Claddagh Ring is symbolic for the clasped hand design that is combined with the heart and crown which symbolises Love, Friendship, and Loyalty. For many generations the Irish Claddagh ring was kept with great pride, especially as heirlooms for the day that a daughter would get married and has been known as the Irish wedding ring for many years. The design has now become very popular internationally and the simplicity of the ring combined with the symbolism makes the perfect gift for a friend or loved one.
We pride ourselves on being able to offer our customers exclusive pieces that cannot be found elsewhere and in particular, the Emigration Claddagh Ring which you will discover in this blog post. All of our collections are curated by experienced craftspeople - pieces for the customer who wants to invest in a timeless piece to celebrate their Irish roots.
We are delighted to assist people in purchasing investment pieces that are sure to become heirlooms passed down through future generations and here at Triona, we are sure to have a piece which will be treasured and admired for many years to come.
Designed and handcrafted in Ireland, these beautiful white gold Claddagh earrings are an exquisite piece of Irish history. The beauty of the Claddagh collection is the story behind the craftsmanship that originated in Galway, Ireland. As you will have seen previously mentioned, the hands gently hold the heart which represented his love for her and the crown for showcasing his loyalty. This is a story which is known all over the world today. Although a subtle piece of celtic jewellery, they are a beautiful piece to add to your Irish jewellery collection.
This beautiful Irish Claddagh ring has been crafted in Dublin, Ireland and the unisex band means it can be used as a his and hers friendship, promise ring or gift that has great Irish heritage. It has been intricately designed in Sterling Silver and 10ct yellow gold and most interestingly, the Claddagh ring was known as the old Irish wedding ring in years gone by due to its romantic meaning. The heart for love, hands for friendship and crown for loyalty which promised the wearer's heart to another - a lovely piece to symbolise love to all.
If you are looking for the perfect gift direct from Ireland, our Irish Claddagh birthstone necklaces are the ideal choice. There is a necklace available for every birth month and they are a lovely way to add a personal touch to any occasion. Each necklace features the Claddagh symbol which is representative of the heart for love, hands for friendship and crown for loyalty making this a beautiful piece to give to someone special in your life. There is a matching ring also available and combined with the necklace, makes the perfect Irish gift. Included is an image of the August birthstone and the sage green colour of this peridot stone ensures that a touch of Ireland has been added to this Claddagh pendant.
It is known that you are to leave the best pieces to last and here we introduce The Emigration ring which is designed exclusively for Triona in collaboration with Solvar. Combining 14ct gold and 32 diamonds which each represent a county in Ireland, it is a truly special piece of jewellery and one that will be treasured for many generations. The true beauty of pieces like the Emigration ring is that there is a history embedded in it and it was designed to commemorate all those with Irish ancestry and Irish connections, both past and present.
There is a special connection knowing that you have a statement piece of Irish history on your hand and it is an investment piece that will never date. The historic Claddagh design incorporates three unique elements - the heart for love, hands for friendship and crown for loyalty.
The Emigration ring has different meanings associated with it and this is what sets it apart from other pieces of jewellery. If you decide to wear the ring with the heart turned outward, you are signifying that you are open for love and opposite to that, if the heart is pointing inward, you are considered to have a partner. The Emigration Ring is most certainly an idyllic Irish symbol of true love and in a unisex style, it can be gifted for any special occasion. Exclusive to Triona, this beautiful piece of Irish jewelry is hand crafted in Ireland, comes complete with a Certificate of Appraisal and is also available in a 14ct White Gold.
You can shop all pieces in store or online HERE

Having sourced several locations in beautiful Barnesmore, it was also an opportunity to stop and admire the beautiful landscape that is on our doorstep - scenery you wouldn’t normally have time to appreciate in the hustle and bustle of everyday life as it resumes.
The garments are of course, an integral part of any brand shoot but the true definition of team is, together we achieve more and this was demonstrated by our exceptional models, photographer, videographer and make-up artist who helped bring the shoot vision to life.

For many years now, our signature and best selling piece for men has been the Brown, Herringbone Jacket which you can browse HERE. The majority of our pieces are inspired by the Wild Atlantic Way and this classic jacket, which is 100% pure Irish lambswool, is no different. This garment is the perfect way to introduce tweed to your wardrobe and not to mention, a truly versatile piece that you will have for years to come thanks to its effortless style.
Scarves are one of the must have accessories for the colder months (or all year round if you live in Ireland) and we are proud stockists here at Triona of Mc Kernan Woollen Mills, one of the most established scarf designers and manufacturers in Ireland.
A family run business, founded by an Irish/German couple based in the West of Ireland and their exquisite designs are sold all over the world.
“As a product, scarves have a high perceived value but for us they are also a canvas that allows us to express our artistry, love for colour and appreciation of high quality textiles. As for the customer, a scarf can both enhance and compliment a person’s complexion and outfit. It can flatter, adorn, comfort, uplift, and of course, protect. Finally, it goes without saying that a scarf also makes a wonderful gift.”
The scarves from McKernan Woollen Mills can easily flatter, adorn any outfit, uplift the wearer and protect against the cooler weather.
Up until 1995, all of their wool scarves were woven on hand looms. They have now progressed to using 120 year old cast iron shuttle looms and their scarves are woven using yarns such as virgin merino wool, cashmere and alpaca.
Restored Domestic weaving looms have now been added to their studio. This piece of 19th century technology has helped hugely with the finishing process as it creates a woven selvedge. This design detail is comparable to handwoven textiles in years gone by and gives each scarf a superior finish.
McKernan Woollen Mills use the most up to date knitting solutions and allow them to work with different stitch combinations such as the most sought after jacquard.
Experimentation is always at the heart of the design process in the McKernan team and they are continuously working to create new and innovative designs.
Using the highest quality yarns is always of utmost importance and comes first in the design process. The drape, finish and versatility of the scarves has always been one of their main focuses.
Broken twill weaves, rip weaves, herringbone and basket weave are just a few of the stitches that are incorporated into these exclusive Irish scarves.
Choose from silky smooth or textured, patterned or plain, oversized or narrow - there is sure to be one to suit every taste! From bright vibrant pinks to tonal blues, these colours are sure to make the perfect gift direct from Ireland.
The Cosmo scarf is a top quality example of Irish design and craftsmanship from McKernan Woollen Mills. Background
A family run business based in Tuamgraney, County Clare, McKernan Woollen Mills have been creating vibrant woollen scarves since 1985.
Established by Eugene and Anke McKernan on the West Coast of Ireland. The McKernan family are firm believers that creating these unique Irish scarves allows them to have a canvas to express their infinite love for colour and show their dedicated appreciation for the highest quality textiles.
An Irish/German couple who both trained as handweavers, it is evident to see the passion that goes into this Irish business.
Soon after the business was established, they quickly understood that their main focus would be on scarves. As everything was then handwoven, they wanted to ensure that they would be able to produce accessories that were both creative and viable.
The Making Process
The scarves from McKernan Woollen Mills can easily flatter, adorn any outfit, uplift the wearer and protect against the cooler weather.
Up until 1995, all of their wool scarves were woven on hand looms. They have now progressed to using 120 year old cast iron shuttle looms and their scarves are woven using yarns such as virgin merino wool, cashmere and alpaca.
Restored Hattersley Domestic looms have now been added to their studio. The narrow width of these looms are ideal for weaving scarves and can be seen in action in the image below. This piece of 19th century technology has helped hugely with the finishing process as it creates a woven selvedge. This design detail is comparable to handwoven textiles in years gone by and gives each scarf a superior finish.
Stoll machines are used to provide the most up to date knitting solutions and allow them to work with different stitch combinations such as the most sought after jacquard. This has opened up another realm of creativity for the McKernan team. Experimentation is always at the heart of the design process and they are continuously working to create new and innovative designs.
Today
Now 35 years in business, McKernan Woollen Mills have grown from strength to strength and have become well established within the Irish design industry. Now employing a team of over 12 people in their Clare studio, they are going from strength to strength every year with their contemporary Irish accessories.
It is evident the love and care that has been poured into each of these scarves.
We are proud to stock a beautiful collection of knit and woven scarves such as the Circus, Cosmos and Astrakhan.

Inspired by the Wild Atlantic Way
The Wild Atlantic Way is a landscape straight out of a fairy tale. Its lush greenery, soft rolling hills and spectacular coastal views are simply iconic. This seemingly untouched region of Ireland is also well known for its rich history, culture and fashion.
One of the most famous crafts to have emerged from the Donegal region is the production of Donegal Tweed and knitwear. For centuries the West coast of Ireland has been the source of intricately designed wool products.
Here at Triona, we are focused on keeping this tradition alive through our weaving. The rugged landscape surrounding us here in Donegal, is the main source of inspiration for many of tones and textures in our collections.
Weaving landscapes into fashion
What’s unique about our Donegal Tweed is the way each piece is designed and inspired by nature itself. From the Slieve League Cliffs to sunset over Grianán of Áileach (where kings once ruled), you are sure to carry home a piece of history.
Our products are woven from the highest quality lambswool. You may be draped in a gorgeous Marie tweed coat but you will hear the echoes of the gentle rolling of waves unto the shore at Ballymastocker Bay. Without even leaving your inner-city apartment!
Our Donegal Tweed designs reflect the lines, textures and curves of craggy cliffs and coastal beaches. The colours are earthy and vibrant, much like the Wild Atlantic Way. The deep purple of wild heather, dark brown earth, ethereal ocean blue and the green of rolling fields are all represented in various patterns and colours throughout our designs.
Each piece also relays a story, of tradition and an ancient craft woven into contemporary fashion. They are modern but retain a certain vintage aspect that is more art than clothing.
Aran sweaters (also known as a Fisherman sweater) have been around for many centuries in Ireland. They are high quality, warm and cosy but their beautiful textured designs depict a deeper meaning. A lot of thought and care goes into the creation of these products, with all of the stitches depicting different meanings. The vibrant blue and green tones of the Atlantic Ocean and golden sandy beaches can be found in the colour stories of these Irish sweaters.
Own your own piece of the Wild Atlantic Way
Apart from our collections of Donegal Tweed coats and sweaters, we also offers a range of blankets and throws, scarves and other accessories. Every one of these pieces have their own story and depict various regions around Donegal and the Wild Atlantic Way. If you have no need for a warm winter tweed, you can surely experience the blissful comfort of a Triona blanket!
If you can’t travel to the Donegal region to experience the rich heritage of Triona in person, you can purchase a unique piece from the comfort of your own home. We facilitate worldwide shipping, and ship our unique landscape straight to you (in the form of a “one of kind” woven design).
Owning a coat or sweater from Triona is like owning a miniature slice of the Wild Atlantic Way!

The pieces draw inspiration from the local surroundings, sights and smells. Breath-taking rocky cliff faces, speckled rocks, the wild blue sea, the Donegal smokey morning mist... these are the colours, tones and textures that blend to give rural North West Ireland its vividness and vitality.
Much has been written about the famous Aran sweater, its origins and what meanings the patterns hold, What makes a Fisherman Out Of Ireland piece special is the authenticity of an Irish inspired sweater, made in Ireland, with a modern fit and yarns that you can wear next to your skin.

Tweed capes come in many styles, from capes to shawls, cape coats and ponchos, they are as diverse as they are versatile, but what are the differences between these styles? In this blog we hope we can help you with that question.
When you hear the word ‘cape’ you may picture a long flowing piece of fabric hanging off the shoulders of a rather large superhero, or even super villain. But, capes in reality are much more quiet, conventional, modern and stylish. Draped over the shoulders they will often be open on the sides without sleeves. Most modern-day capes will come to the waist or to the top of the legs.
In years gone by here in Ireland, the wives of local weavers would wear capes to social gatherings, fairs and markets to show off the quality, patterns and design of their husbands tweed.
Today, their design remains similar; they have retained their original purpose, benefits and stylistic designs. The reason why the cape has thrived as a garment for centuries is because of its versatility; they are comfortable, convenient, non-restricting, complementing, accessorising and they provide warmth in mild weather.
They are quite flexible in their design, too. They can be button-down capes also known as cape coats, long capes, woollen capes made with tweed or even waterproof materials for the unexpected downpours.
Moving onto the important part, we already know that a wool cape is a flexible garment, with fashion designers all over the world taking the garments style and making modern day alterations.
If you are considering a woollen or tweed cape such as our range of wool capes , you’ll be fashioning your style for the Autumn and Winter months, providing a soft and comfortable outfit-topper. They are the perfect addition to any outfit; work, date night, high-street and runway. For example; say you’re meeting some friends on a Saturday for a shopping trip but going for a meal afterwards. Wearing some dark trousers and ankle boots with a white shirt, topped with your cape will provide the perfect get-up for both occasions rolled into one!
Often associated with the see-through waterproof and hooded cover given by stewards while you were enjoying the rain and were up to your ankles in mud at your favourite concert or festival, the poncho is a garment with a rich history and many cultural ties.
Unlike the cape, the poncho is worn by both men and women and features no arm holes. In its most simple form, it can be a large square piece of fabric; woollen or tweed, often with patterns related to the maker's culture. Worn over the shoulders, the large square will have a circular hole in the centre for placing over the head. The poncho will then droop over the neck, shoulders, arms and chest for warmth. In some cultures, the poncho would have frills on the hem and historically are largely associated with the cultures of South America.
Here at Triona, our soft wool poncho’s offer a timeless and chic style in Donegal tweed with a pointed hem and soft neckline that is a perfect additional layer for crisp mornings. If you’re braving the beautiful and changing weather of Ireland, then a tweed poncho is a perfect addition to your wardrobe. Here in Europe the temperature can drop in the evenings and, if you’re out for dinner or a night out, you may want a little extra something, like a tweed poncho on your shoulders to fight the chill.
They can be worn with some skinny jeans, court heels and matching clutch, Don’t forget your statement lips and earrings!
A shawl can be thought of as a large piece of fabric that can be draped around the wearer in lots of ways.
The shawl’s history can be traced right back to 14th century Persia where the name originated from woven rectangular garments that were draped over shoulders and around the body.
More recently in Ireland the shawl became popular in the late 19th century. The most popular example being the Galway shawl, which usually refers to a specific type of heavy weight shawl that was worn by Irish women during the colder seasons.
This style of shawl was still being worn up until the 1950s by a few older, more traditional Irish women. Throughout Ireland, women traditionally wore various types of lightweight shawls that were hand knit, crocheted, or woven; and would have been of solid color, plaid, print, or paisley.
Lightweight shawls, worn directly over the blouse and tied or tucked in at the waist, were worn in all seasons both indoors and out.
Today we have modern designs with our wool throw capes that can be draped into any flattering style.
Although we mentioned a shawl being like a large scarf, they are worn differently. There are many ways in which a shawl can be draped The shawl can hang elegantly from the shoulder providing a slim and elongated figure. The throw cape can also be paired with a belt around the throw to provide a cinched-waist look.
Here at Triona we provide traditional Irish tweed garments and including wool capes, ponchos and the shawls. Our women’s wool and tweed cape section can be found by clicking here.
